What is a login ID?

A login ID is the unique identifier that you have been issued as a user of a particular system. A login ID is specific to a login type:

  • A Harvard University ID (HUID) is a person's Harvard University ID number (the first 8 digits of the Harvard ID number on your Harvard ID card).  **Extension and Summer School students please note that the DCE ID number beginning with ‘@’ is not the same as your Harvard ID number. For more information about the DCE ID numbers and PINs, please see the DCE website: https://dceweb.harvard.edu/prod/gowfaqs.taf
  • An XID Login ID is often a person's email address, but could be almost any value specified as a login ID when an XID account is created
  • A Post.Harvard Login ID is the same ID that Harvard Alumni use to login to post.harvard.edu.  Alumni/ae, HAA Associates and Students can register for Post.Harvard login credentials here: https://post.harvard.edu/olc/pub/HAA/register/register.cgi
  • An eCommons Login ID is the same id that Harvard Medical School affiliates use to login to ecommons.med.harvard.edu.
  • FAS/Central Username refers to either your FAS or University AD Login ID.  FAS users can now use their FAS username as a Login ID with PIN system.  Central Icemail/University AD users can use their ADID (usually 3 letters, 3 or4 numbers (e.g. abs123) as a Login ID with the PIN system.

What is a login type?

A login type identifies a category of login ID. You are being asked for a login type because some PIN-protected applications are available to multiple groups of users and those groups use different types of login IDs. Applications that accept only a single login type will display only that type by default. Applications that accept multiple login types will provide users the option to select a type from a list. Available login types are (click the login type to learn more about it):

Make sure that the correct login type is selected for the login id that you intend to use. If you are having trouble logging in, it may be because you have selected the wrong login type.

Note that not all applications work with every login type.  If you have questions about which login type to use, contact HUIT support services (email ithelp@harvard.edu or pin_help@harvard.edu)

What is a PIN / Password?

In the context of the PIN system, PIN is another name for password.

A password is a secret set of characters that you create in order to use it with your Login ID to authenticate (login) so that you can access protected resources.  When the correct PIN/password is entered for a specific unique Login ID, access is granted because the secret password and login ID pair are being presented together.
